McLaren Formula 1 driver Oscar Piastri has suggested that his team is unlikely to resolve its current technical challenges before the conclusion of the 2026 season. With only six races left on the calendar, the Australian believes the car’s development has reached a plateau.

“I think in the short term, it’s probably as good as it’s going to get,” Piastri told the media. “Malaysia was another positive step in understanding what is required to fundamentally bring the car closer to where I want it to be, but I don’t think we’re going to find any magic answers this year.”

The 2026 regulations introduced sweeping changes that have left several drivers across the grid struggling to find a consistent rhythm.

“The cars themselves are very different, and the tyres are quite different as well, which isn’t going to change anytime soon,” Piastri explained. “I’m certainly making progress, but it’s still not as comfortable as I would like.”

Piastri characterized McLaren’s current performance window as volatile, describing it as an “all or nothing” experience.

“Either you’re quite a way off or you’re really fast; there’s not really an in-between,” he noted. When questioned about the cause of these drastic performance swings, he joked: “If I knew, I’d be a much happier person.”

The Australian also acknowledged that his teammate and reigning champion, Lando Norris, has occasionally over-performed, extracting more pace from the machine than it inherently possesses.

“Some of the laps Lando has produced in qualifying to secure pole position have been better than what the car deserves,” Piastri remarked. Norris has previously described the vehicle as “mentally exhausting” to operate. Team principal Andrea Stella echoed these sentiments, confirming that the underlying issues with the MCL40 will likely persist until the introduction of the 2027 chassis.

Piastri currently sits seventh in the drivers’ championship with 138 points, yet to secure a Grand Prix victory this season. Meanwhile, reigning constructors’ champions McLaren hold third place with 339 points, maintaining a slim seven-point lead over a surging Red Bull heading into the United States Grand Prix.
