An Indonesian minister has called for enhanced student safety measures following the discovery of nearly 1,000 weapons at a private school in South Jakarta.
Police confiscated 995 airsoft guns and one live firearm from a school operated by the Harapan Ibu Islamic School Foundation on Friday, as reported by Antara news agency.
The foundation’s former chair, identified only by the initials IWD, has been summoned for questioning. IWD was dismissed amid allegations of misusing foundation funds, according to the Jakarta Globe.
All the weapons, along with suspected narcotics and 25 pornographic CDs, were discovered in a room previously used by IWD during a clearance operation by the school’s new management.
When the room was opened, we discovered the weapons,” explained Untung Sangaji, a board member, noting that they were classified as such because “airsoft guns can be lethal; the bullets are unembossed and lack grooves.” We cannot determine why these items were stored on school premises, he added.
