Pakistan Advocates Comprehensive Strategy for Sustainable Middle East Peace at UN]
Pakistan emphasized that achieving lasting stability in the Middle East requires addressing deep-rooted historical, political, cultural, and religious complexities through principled diplomacy, rather than merely pursuing normalization agreements. This stance was articulated during a United Nations Security Council debate on advancing political solutions in the region, occurring weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump encouraged countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar to join an expanded Abraham Accords framework aimed at resolving the Iran conflict.
Pakistan explicitly rejected inclusion in any arrangement conflicting with its core ideologies, noting that public skepticism toward Israel remains pervasive across Muslim nations given its ongoing military operations in Gaza.
During the Security Council proceedings, Pakistan’s UN envoy Asim Iftikhar Ahmad highlighted the fragility of the Middle East situation, attributing stagnation to consistent disregard for international law, non-implementation of UN resolutions, and the absence of genuine political processes. He described the region as one of the world’s most complex political landscapes where civilization, religion, identity, and history intersect profoundly—factors that must be approached with objectivity, balance, and deep understanding.
The Abraham Accords, initially established during Trump’s first term in 2020, normalized relations between Israel and several Arab states, including the UAE and Bahrain, with Morocco and Sudan later joining. While Trump recently promoted the framework as a pathway to broader regional integration, Pakistan maintains no recognition or diplomatic ties with Israel. Islamabad supports an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital—a position enjoy widespread domestic backing.
Ahmad underscored that despite a ceasefire agreement mediated by the United States and eight Arab-Islamic nations—including Pakistan—violations continue in Gaza, where nearly three years of conflict have caused catastrophic humanitarian suffering. He asserted that the Palestinian question remains central to regional peace efforts, requiring a time-bound, irreversible political process rooted in relevant UN resolutions to establish a sovereign, contiguous Palestinian state on pre-1967 borders with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
