Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Group Captain Asim Tariq, who tragically lost his life while attempting to rescue a woman from an abduction attempt, was laid to rest with full military honours following a solemn funeral prayer ceremony on Tuesday, according to a statement from the military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The funeral prayers, attended by senior PAF leadership, military personnel, and members of the public, were conducted with full military honours in recognition of the officer’s extraordinary courage, selfless service, and unwavering commitment to duty.
PAF Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, alongside rank-and-file airmen and civilians, paid tribute to the deceased officer, commending his supreme sacrifice. ISPR quoted ACM Sidhu as stating that the commander’s actions “epitomise the finest traditions of the PAF and the Armed Forces of Pakistan.”
ACM Sidhu emphasized that Group Captain Tariq’s bravery exemplified the unwavering dedication of Pakistan Air Force personnel to safeguard not only national security but also the lives, dignity, and honor of their fellow citizens.
The fatal incident occurred in the Margalla police station jurisdiction near Air University and Bahria University on Sunday afternoon. According to ISPR, while en route to an official assignment in Rawalpindi, Group Captain Tariq observed a man forcibly dragging a woman toward his motorcycle. The officer immediately reversed course, stopped his vehicle, and intervened to assist.
During the intervention, the suspect reportedly engaged the officer in confrontation before fatally shooting him. Islamabad Police Inspector General (IGP) Ali Nasir Rizvi announced at a Sunday-night press briefing that the suspect was apprehended within nine hours of the incident.
Local authorities revealed that both the victim and the suspect were employees of a cash and carry store in the G-6 area, where the suspect occasionally assisted the female employee with transportation. On Sunday, after picking her up from work, the suspect allegedly attempted to abduct her to take her to a secluded location. Upon her resistance, the confrontation escalated, resulting in the tragic outcome.
