Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Group Captain Asim Tariq, who died while trying to rescue a woman from a suspected abduction, was buried with full military honours on Tuesday, according to the Inter‑Services Public Relations (ISPR).
Funeral prayers were held for the officer that day, and ISPR stated he was interred with “full military honours in recognition of his exceptional courage, selfless devotion and unwavering sense of duty.”
Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, senior PAF officers, airmen, and a large crowd of civilians attended the prayers and paid final respects to the fallen officer, acknowledging his supreme sacrifice.
ACM Sidhu noted that the officer’s sacrifice “epitomises the finest traditions of the PAF and the Armed Forces of Pakistan.” He added that the officer’s actions showed that PAF personnel remain committed to protecting not only the nation’s borders but also the lives, dignity, and honour of their countrymen.
The incident took place on Sunday near Air University, opposite Bahria University, within the jurisdiction of Margalla police station.
Tariq was travelling to Rawalpindi on official duty when he saw a man forcing a woman onto his motorcycle. He performed a U‑turn, pulled over, and intervened.
As the officer stepped in, the woman approached his vehicle seeking safety. The suspect, who had first argued with Tariq, then opened fire on him.
Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Nasir Rizvi said the suspect was arrested within nine hours of the incident. Police reported that the woman and the suspect were co‑workers at a cash‑and‑carry outlet in G‑6, and that the suspect had been driving her home earlier that day. When the woman resisted his attempt to take her to a park or another location, he stopped the motorcycle on 9th Avenue, leading to the confrontation.
