Pakistan conducted airstrikes in Afghanistan, targeting alleged militant hideouts in two locations and reporting the deaths of at least 22 fighters.
The announcement, issued by Pakistan’s Ministry of Information on Thursday, coincided with Kabul’s accusation that the strikes killed at least nine women and children in the provinces of Kunar and Helmand.
Al Jazeera was unable to independently verify the casualty figures.
Afghan government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid stated that the strikes occurred late on Wednesday, resulting in at least nine deaths and 11 injuries.
In a post on X, he indicated that the assaults on Kunar in the northeast and Helmand in the south destroyed three houses.
“We condemn this act as an aggression and crime against all accepted principles,” he wrote.
The alleged strikes occur amid a surge in hostilities between the neighboring nations, following three months of relative calm. Islamabad contends that Kabul is providing sanctuary to armed groups, notably the Tehrik‑i‑Taliban Pakistan, which conduct cross‑border attacks on Pakistani soil.
The Afghan government rejects the allegations, asserting that the Pakistani assaults targeted civilian homes and resulted in the killing and injuring of women and children.
