ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended Pakistan’s condolences to Venezuela on Thursday following powerful twin earthquakes that have claimed at least 32 lives and left over 700 people injured. He emphasized Pakistan’s solidarity with those impacted by the disaster.

The twin quakes, measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, hit near Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, on Wednesday. The impact caused building collapses, extensive infrastructure damage, and led authorities to declare a state of emergency.

“I am deeply saddened by the devastation and loss of life caused by the earthquakes in Venezuela,” Sharif posted on X.

“On behalf of the people of Pakistan, I offer our heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Venezuela, particularly the families of the victims. We pray for the injured and remain in solidarity with all those affected during this challenging period.”

“Venezuela’s interim President, Delcy Rodriguez, confirmed the initial death toll and injury figures in a statement, noting that rescue teams continue to assess conditions in the hardest‑hit coastal state of La Guaira.”

The twin earthquakes sparked panic in Caracas, driving residents into the streets. Authorities shut down the nation’s main international airport after it suffered serious structural damage, and officials reported multiple aftershocks, cautioning of ongoing risks.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the 7.5‑magnitude quake occurred just 39 seconds after a 7.2‑magnitude foreshock, an occurrence described as a rare seismic doublet.
