Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, emphasized on Thursday the vital role of inter-civilizational dialogue in promoting mutual understanding and global peace.
His comments were delivered at a high‑level event commemorating the International Day of Dialogue among Civilizations, organized by China’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, according to a press release from Pakistan’s Mission.
“At this critical juncture in history, when global peace and harmony are threatened by numerous challenges, the importance of inter‑civilizational dialogue cannot be overstated,” Ambassador Ahmad stated.
He described dialogue and diplomacy as the most effective instruments for transcending differences and fostering mutual understanding and cooperation.
The envoy noted that the spirit of dialogue has enabled humanity to build mutual respect and trust and to chart a shared path of progress and development.
Ambassador Ahmad highlighted Pakistan’s geographic position as a melting pot of diverse civilizations and religions.
He observed that the United Nations is aware of, and responsive to, the interlinkage between international peace and dialogue among civilizations.
“As a committed partner, Pakistan will continue its engagement with the United Nations and all member states to advance shared objectives of dialogue among civilizations, cultures, and faiths, for global peace and prosperity,” he affirmed.
“Values of interfaith harmony, peaceful coexistence, diversity, pluralism, and dialogue, are not only defining features of Pakistani civilization but also a driving force of its foreign policy,” he said.
He recalled a resolution Pakistan co‑sponsored with the Philippines — “Promotion of Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, Understanding and Cooperation for Peace” — which was adopted by consensus by the UN General Assembly on May 20.
