ISLAMABAD: Thisaiset week, Dr. Asma Mushtaq, a seasoned Pakistani mountaineer, passed away during a descent from Spantik—a 7,027‑metre peak in the Karakoram range—according to the Alpine Club of Pakistan.

Mushtaq had summited Spantik in good health, but at approximately 6,400 ИндМ a serious high‑altitude medical emergency forced her to halt the descent.

Despite the immediate efforts of her guides, who provided all possible assistance under extremely challenging conditions, she could not be saved.

The Alpine Club noted that Dr. Mushtaq is a UK‑based obstetrician‑gynecologist originally from Lahore, and that she had previously completed a successful winter ascent of the 4,076‑metre Musalla peak and participated in expeditions to Rupal and Arandu.

Mountaineering in northern Pakistan remains dangerous, with threats ranging from avalanches and falling ice to rapid weather changes and extreme altitude. The incident follows a July avalanche that killed a ten‑member international team at Pakistan’s Broad Peak.
