Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been moved from prison to a hospital under police supervision, according to local media reports.
The founder of the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party was transferred from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad late Thursday, following a Supreme Court directive, reported Geo News.
Sources told Geo that authorities had been preparing for the transfer throughout the day. The Supreme Court issued the order on Tuesday, mandating the move be completed within 48 hours.
Government officials had previously filed a petition challenging the court’s decision. Meanwhile, PTI broadcast live coverage of the preparations for Khan’s transfer but has not issued an official statement. The government has also remained silent on the matter.
The relocation addresses long-standing requests from Khan’s family and political party regarding his health. According to the court order, Khan will undergo examination by a medical board that includes his personal physician.
Khan’s legal representative, Uzair Bhandari, confirmed that the former leader’s next court hearing is scheduled for September 16, and Khan is expected to remain hospitalized until at least that date.
This marks the longest period Khan will spend outside jail since his imprisonment in August 2023, when he was convicted on multiple corruption charges that he and his party maintain are politically motivated.
Khan, 73, was removed from office in April 2022 through a parliamentary no-confidence vote, ending his tenure as prime minister after serving from 2018 to 2022.
