Pandas Touch Down in Atlanta Under Renewed US-China Conservation Pact

Two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, have reached the United States from southwestern China.

Two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, have arrived in Georgia on a decade-long loan from China as a diplomatic gesture.

A new partnership between Zoo Atlanta and the China Wildlife Conservation Association designates Atlanta as one of three US zoos currently housing giant pandas.

The animals departed early Sunday from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, according to Chinese state media, following a three-day summit in Washington between President Trump and President Xi Jinping, which yielded no major breakthroughs on AI, trade, Taiwan, and the Iran conflict.

Although the transfer was finalized in April, Xi announced the timeline at the White House on Thursday, stating the pandas would travel from the Chengdu Research Base to Zoo Atlanta within days. The shipment of this vulnerable species aimed to demonstrate renewed bilateral relations between the world’s two largest economies.

Ahead of their arrival, Zoo Atlanta upgraded its habitats and secured a long-term supply of Atlanta bamboo, which thrives in a similar climate to Chengdu.

The bears completed a 16-hour charter flight across the International Date Line, landing in Atlanta shortly before 7:00 AM local time (11:00 AM GMT).

Midway through the flight over Alaska, the FedEx Boeing 777 topped Flightradar24’s global tracking charts.

Chinese state-run media reported that steamed corn buns, bamboo shoots, and carrots were prepared to nourish the pandas during the journey, while the US mobilized a specialized care team to accompany them.

A zoo spokesperson told Al Jazeera that the team has “done everything possible to accommodate them,” but a definitive timeline for their arrival and public debut remains “unconfirmed.”

“This is a thrilling day for Zoo Atlanta and a historic moment for the City of Atlanta, the state of Georgia, and beyond,” Zoo Atlanta President and CEO Raymond B. King stated. “We are elated to welcome Ping Ping and Fu Shuang and look forward to sharing that joy with our members, guests, city, and community in the coming weeks.”

Visitors must wait to see the pandas, as the bears will undergo a month-long quarantine in a biosecure area of the zoo’s new giant panda complex. The zoo previously housed pandas in 2024.

Ping Ping, a male, and Fu Shuang, a female, were born in 2020.

Globally revered, these iconic animals have been deployed worldwide for decades as diplomatic emissaries under China’s “panda diplomacy” initiative, leveraging their public appeal to cultivate goodwill, secure trade deals, and enhance geopolitical standing. When foreign relations strain, Beijing allows loan agreements to expire.

Xi described this latest loan program as an example of “friendship between the Chinese and Americans.”

The summit was Xi’s first visit to Washington in over a decade and the second meeting with Trump this year.

Concrete outcomes from the meetings were modest, limited to a two-month trade truce extension, the revival of panda loans, and Xi’s endorsement of Trump’s rebranding of artificial intelligence as “super intelligence.”
