A passenger was injured when a power bank overheated and released smoke on a HK Express flight from Hong Kong to South Korea on Sunday, leading crew to activate emergency safety procedures before the plane landed safely.
The event took place on flight UO676 bound for Jeju, which was carrying 236 passengers and seven crew members, prompting HK Express to issue an apology.
The budget carrier, a subsidiary of Hong Kong’s flag carrier Cathay Pacific Airways, reported that the power bank was kept in a bag beneath a passenger’s seat and began overheating as the aircraft neared Jeju International Airport.
Crew members promptly adhered to standard safety protocols, placing the device in a heat‑resistant fire‑containment bag and submerging it in water to control the situation, the airline said.
