Vaibhav Suryavanshi appeared poised to dominate the Duleep Trophy 2026 semifinal for East Zone against Central Zone in Bengaluru. Yet Rajat Patidar intervened with a moment of brilliance in the field, dismissing the young batter and delivering a vital breakthrough for his side.

Suryavanshi had already stamped his authority on the contest, registering a composed 92 off 81 deliveries during East Zone’s first innings. Carrying that form into the second innings, he looked destined to play another match-defining knock before Patidar’s athleticism ended his stay at the crease.

Patidar’s Game-Changing Intervention

Operating in the middle overs, Thakur delivered a full-pitched ball on the fifth delivery of his over. Suryavanshi attempted to lift it over the leg side but failed to find the middle of the bat, skewing the ball high into the Bengaluru sky. Patidar, positioned at mid-on, read the trajectory instantly and sprinted backward toward the deep mid-wicket boundary.

Tracking the ball cleanly, the Central Zone captain launched into a full-stretch dive and clung on to a magnificent catch. Suryavanshi departed for 40 off 43 balls, halting a threatening cameo that had begun to tilt the contest in East Zone’s favor.

East Zone Derail After Promising Start

Chasing a target of 159, East Zone began their innings with Suryavanshi and experienced opener Abhimanyu Easwaran at the crease. The young left-hander adopted a measured approach early on, carefully negotiating the new ball before gradually shifting gears. The opening pair accumulated 61 runs before Suryavanshi decided to take the attack to Yash Thakur.

In the opening four balls of the 14th over, Suryavanshi launched a six and struck three boundaries, suddenly applying pressure on the Central Zone bowlers. However, his attacking instincts ultimately cost him his wicket. Central Zone had earlier been bowled out for 266 in their first innings, where Suryavanshi’s 96 had anchored East Zone’s reply. He and Easwaran had forged a 161-run opening partnership in that innings, and the duo had replicated a 61-run stand to begin the second essay.

Following Suryavanshi’s exit, East Zone suffered a collapse, sliding from 61 without loss to 93 for 3. Patidar’s spectacular grab was not the only moment of fielding excellence on the day, as East Zone fast bowler Mohammed Shami also produced a stunning one-handed return catch to remove Harsh Dubey.
