Mexico’s Pato O’Ward earned his first win of the season in dominant fashion, claiming victory at the Honda Indy 200 on Sunday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The Arrow McLaren driver overtook teammate Christian Lundgaard with 48 laps remaining, securing a historic 1-2 finish for McLaren in IndyCar competition—the team’s first-ever sweep of the top two positions.
O’Ward crossed the line just 0.9877 seconds ahead of Lundgaard, maintaining an average speed of 117.932 mph over the 2.258-mile, 13-turn natural road course. His 10th career victory highlighted a strategic effort, as he capitalized on a late-race error by Lundgaard in the second turn. The Mexican driver controlled the final laps to solidify his position in the championship standings.
“It’s been a year, it’s been a tough one for sure,” O’Ward remarked. “Today was a perfect example of execution. I waited for the right moment to strike and controlled the race from there.”
Kyle Kirkwood (Andretti Global) rounded out the podium in third, with Rinus VeeKay (Juncos Hollinger), Alex Palou (Chip Ganassi Racing), and Will Power (Andretti) completing the top five. Series leader Palou retained his advantage with 404 points, while O’Ward’s win propelled him to fifth place with 310 points. The 18-race season continues in two weeks at the Music City Grand Prix in Nashville.
