Pato O’Ward announced that his pursuit of a Formula 1 career has ended, confirming his full commitment to the IndyCar Series during an appearance on Conor Daly’s Speed Street podcast.
He expressed gratitude for his time in Formula 1, noting that driving those cars has been an extraordinary experience and highlighting the performance capabilities of the vehicles.
However, O’Ward said his current life stage no longer motivates him to remain a reserve in Formula 1. He is fully focused on IndyCar, where he feels most fulfilled and wishes to stay.
He will join the Arrow McLaren lineup alongside newcomer Scott Dixon and returning Swedish driver Felix Rosenqvist. The 2027 season marks the final year of his contract with the team overseen by Zak Brown.

The Mexican driver said he is not interested in driving the current generation of Formula 1 cars, which have drawn criticism from fellow drivers. He has asked to be released from any Formula 1 commitments, stating that IndyCar provides the racing environment he desires, offering simple, enjoyable competition where he feels happiest.
Unlike some rivals who chase financial gain and fame in Formula 1, O’Ward benefits from a lucrative McLaren contract and enjoys strong recognition and popularity within the American series.
He added that he does not seek additional fame or wealth, noting that he has achieved a position he never imagined and feels fortunate.
