PGA Star Patrick Reed Withdraws from BMW PGA Championship Amid Injury Setback
Patrick Reed has never withdrawn from an event due to an injury, saying his competitive standard remained unruffled until the unexpected crisis ignited.
He describes the moment becoming critical as his usual resolve shattered.
“I’d much rather walk away and still meet my goal score than actually abandon the match,” he told reporters.
The turning point occurred during the second round of last month’s BMW PGA Championship—an event regarded as the DP World Tour’s flagship showing.
Earlier, at Wentworth Club in England, Reed was surging after a four‑under 68, trailing only by one stroke for nine holes when his luck finally turned.
“Never saw that coming,” Reed said on Wednesday ahead of this week’s Spanish Open, his first appearance since the BMW WD.
He discussed his condition with the tour officials, noting that the injury began as ongoing pain in his neck and shoulder early in the round, followed by a sharp strain in his left hand.
On the third hole he struck off the cart path, and on the ninth slide a tree root caught him. At the par‑three of the tenth tee he mis‑hedged and stepped outside the fairway entirely.
“My hand swelled dramatically. I could not hit a normal flop shot, nor a regular iron on the subsequent hole,” Reed reported.
Unable to execute a proper swing, he decided that pulling himself off the course was the most sensible choice.
Tests conducted near his Texas home uncovered a shoulder problem rather than a broken bone. Although the injury sidelined him for two major‑tour events, Reed stays at the summit of the DP World Tour’s points standings, a ranking earned after departing LIV Golf in January.
“Despite the discomfort, I am able to perform—so many times just taking a swing is enough. I won’t make excuses. Keep grind, and aim to finish the season strong.”
When asked how difficult it was to cope emotionally at the BMW GD, Reed admitted the pressure was immense.
“It was tough, especially at Wentworth,” he said. “Even though it was an incredible venue and one of the faniest gatherings of players, the upset on that Friday reminded me of the unpredictable nature of each week – the victories and setbacks you must weather through the entire year.”
“The decision weeks ago to step away gave me extra recovery time, per medical clearance, ensuring I could return feeling alert after returning healthily.
Reed added, “The competition still looks solid, and I remain confident moving forward – both on the course and mentally.”
