In a recent interview, The Undertaker asked Paul Heyman to describe the behind‑the‑scenes role he holds at WWE today. Heyman referred to his position as a “consigliere,” a term publicly coined by Triple H during Heyman’s Hall of Fame induction in 2024.
On the Title:
“That’s how he described it. He said that in a speech. They came to me on the Hall of Fame, and I’m sure they asked you the same thing — ‘What do you want on the ring?’ And I said, ‘Whatever you want to put on the ring. Surprise me.’ I’m kind of uncomfortable. ‘Put GOAT on it, you know? And good looking, and you deserve a raise.’
“So I just said, ‘Whatever Paul [Triple H] wants.’ And I never talked about it publicly until he did it at my own Hall of Fame induction, but he put the word ‘consigliere’ on it. Which really moved me when I saw it. It caught me off guard.”
On How the Assignments Come:
“It’s the old expression, ‘I serve at the pleasure of the chairman, I serve at the pleasure of the president, I serve at the pleasure of the chief content officer.’ So if he sees somebody and says they’ve got to break through on their promos, they’re in their own way, they’re in their own head — ‘Hey, they’re an A but they need to be an A-plus-plus-plus.’ ‘Hey, they’re a C, they need to be an A. Whatever it is, find it in them. Help pull it out of them.’ That becomes my assignment.”
On How Long It Takes:
“Sometimes that’s a one‑day process; sometimes that becomes a life mission. It all depends on the talent. It all depends on their openness to reach inside and pull it out of themselves, how much they like working with me, if they do at all. Sometimes it’s just a quick thing — help this person through this promo today. And sometimes it’s, ‘Make that your project.’”
On Who He Enjoys Working With:
“I love working with really, really talented people that want to go that next step, that want to take it even further. It’s like the old thing about Michael Jordan showing up at five o’clock for a seven o’clock practice. Why? Because there are other people that want to become Michael Jordan, and he ain’t going to let them.”
On the Talent He’s Working With Now:
“If you give me a Royce Keys, for example — who, despite the fact that he’s been in the business for 15, 20 years has no idea how truly talented he is. Or you give me a Je’Von Evans, or you give me a Jade Cargill, or even Charlotte Flair, who’s been in the business since birth. You look at it from a different perspective, and you force that person to look at it from a different perspective, and it opens up a whole new light for them.”
On What He’s Chasing:
“In their pursuit of something that goes back to walking away with that spiritually orgasmic feeling of, ‘I did something great. I did something special.’ I’m here to help in whatever assists the cause of the promotion to move forward.”
