The Hall of Famer revealed how Heyman’s confidence in Punk became evident during a conflict over communication for Punk’s then-girlfriend Kelly Kelly.
During ECW’s UK tour, Test reportedly demanded Punk relay messages to Kelly Kelly following their breakup. When Punk adamantly refused, tensions rose to the point where Test considered physical confrontation. According to Van Dam, Heyman intervened decisively, stating, “My money’s on the tattoo kid,” after Punk rejected Test’s demands. This exchange demonstrated Heyman’s belief in Punk’s capabilities while foreshadowing his future success in WWE.
“I was just astonished when Paul said that,” Van Dam recalled. “I didn’t know CM Punk personally then, but hearing him defend Punk’s stance so forcefully opened my eyes to how Heyman viewed the ‘tattoo kid.’ He essentially bet on Punk’s potential, and it was a telling moment about his relationship with management.”
