The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has suspended the license of Geo News effective immediately for 15 days following the broadcast of a special transmission deemed offensive to religious sentiments.
In a directive to the Independent Media Corporation (IMC), Pemra cited a violation of regulatory standards under Section 30 of the Pemra Ordinance 2002, which prohibits content that undermines religious, cultural, or social values.
The suspension encompasses all distribution channels, including satellite and digital platforms, requiring immediate compliance from licensees. Pemra has also referred the case to its Council of Complaints for potential further action.
Geo News acknowledged the error in its statement, clarifying the content reflected local Iraqi rituals without endorsing any religious viewpoint. The organization has initiated an internal review to address the lapse and prevent recurrence, while reaffirming its commitment to respecting religious diversity.
