Peter Murrell, former chief executive of the Scottish National Party, was sentenced to just over five years in prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to embezzling more than £400,000 of party funds. The money was used to purchase a motorhome, vehicles and high‑end household items.
Murrell, aged 61, is the estranged spouse of former SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon, who abruptly stepped down as Scotland’s First Minister in 2023, shortly before being summoned for questioning in a financial investigation. Sturgeon was subsequently cleared of any wrongdoing in March of the previous year.
The couple’s concurrent positions within the SNP — Sturgeon as the party’s longest‑serving senior figure and Murrell as its chief administrator — had already raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest even before the misconduct came to light.
What was the case about?
Murrell entered a guilty plea at Edinburgh’s High Court last month, admitting to siphoning SNP funds between 2010 and 2023. The illicit proceeds financed a Volkswagen, a subsequent Jaguar, and purchases from luxury retailers including Estée Lauder, Harrods, and Le Creuset.
Judge Andrew Young imposed a five‑year and three‑month custodial sentence on Murrell on Tuesday.
\”Your conduct represented a serious breach of trust toward the organization you led and its members and donors,\” Judge Young remarked during the sentencing.
\”This was a deliberate act of dishonesty,\” the judge noted. \”The sentence also serves as a warning to senior officials in other large organizations who might consider abusing their authority as Murrell did.\”\
Authorities have announced that they will pursue legal measures to recover the misappropriated funds.
\”The precise motivations behind your actions remain unclear,\” Young observed. \”Moreover, many of the high‑value items you acquired were never actually used.\”\
The scandal raised embarrassing questions for the pro‑independence party, which has held sway over Scottish politics for nearly two decades. Nevertheless, the SNP has managed to retain its position as the strongest party in the Scottish Parliament following the recent elections, a development partially attributed to difficulties faced by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the Labour Party.
How did Sturgeon respond to the news?
Although Sturgeon was exonerated by police and prosecutors the previous year, scrutiny has continued regarding her assertion that she possessed \”no knowledge or suspicion whatsoever\” that Murrell was misusing SNP funds for personal gain.
Even minor items linked to the case — such as a pendant she frequently wore publicly and a DVD box set of the Danish series \”Borgen,\” which she expressed enjoyment of — have been loosely associated with Sturgeon.
Her claim that she had not noticed a luxury motorhome, valued at over £100,000, parked on her husband’s parents’ driveway during a visit, was met with skepticism by some observers.
Through her attorney, Aamer Anwar, Sturgeon released what was characterized as a final statement regarding the matter following Tuesday’s sentencing.
\”While anonymous sources have persistently sought to imply guilt, it is evident after a comprehensive, two‑year investigation that Ms. Sturgeon was neither charged nor prosecuted nor convicted of any offence,\” the statement asserted.
\”Ms. Sturgeon is innocent of any crime, and although this may be a source of frustration for some, it remains a fact that it was Mr. Murrell who was charged, tried, convicted, and sentenced to imprisonment today,\” the statement added.
The statement emphasized that the former First Minister felt \”utterly deceived and let down\” by her husband, whom she had trusted.
The 56‑year‑old announced her separation from Murrell earlier in 2025.
Murrell’s lawyer, John Scullion, informed the court that the former political operative had been isolated by former colleagues throughout the scandal.
