The tourism industry offers joy and escape to many, yet it often marginalizes those who work within it. In Petty Thieves, a feature directorial debut by Croatian filmmaker Mate Ugrin, which debuts at the Proxima Competition of the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on July 5, the film centers on two individuals navigating this dynamic.
Set in the Adriatic’s bustling tourist season, the story follows Rio, a kitchen worker who supplements his income through minor thefts from tourists. When young worker Andrea discovers his actions, they form an unexpected partnership, stealing together and sharing profits. This pragmatic alliance evolves into a deeper bond, challenging their perspectives.
The film explores themes of solidarity among the powerless, highlighting how petty thefts stem from alienation and unstable work. Press notes emphasize that these acts are not mere rebellion but expressions of longing, rooted in a sense of displacement among those struggling to feel at home in a visitor-centric environment.
The cast includes Gavrilo Jović, Tea Ljubešić, Snježana Sinovčić, and Izudin Bajrović. Director Ugrin, known for his acclaimed short Everything Ahead (2021), previously won the Heart of Sarajevo at the Sarajevo Film Festival. Cinematographer Ivan Markovic and editor Jelena Maksimović contribute to the film’s visual and narrative depth. Cercamon manages sales.
The trailer offers a glimpse into the contrasting lives of tourists and locals in Istria’s rural village. While tourists enjoy the sea, Rio grapples with personal struggles. The trailer introduces viewers to his first encounter with Andrea and underscores the film’s melancholic tone.
Though you can’t dive into the sea, you can’t miss the chance to experience this unique story. Watch the exclusive trailer for Petty Thieves below.
