Phoebe Bridgers Delivers Soulful Nirvana Cover During BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge Session

Phoebe Bridgers recently delivered an intimate rendition of Nirvana’s 1991 anthem “Lithium” for the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge. Interestingly, the singer completed the recording session earlier this month, just hours before being hospitalized for appendicitis.

Performing alongside a guitarist, Bridgers also shared a performance of “Bobby,” a standout track from her latest album, Lost Weekend.

Due to her sudden diagnosis, Bridgers was recently forced to reschedule several dates on her U.K. tour. “I got appendicitis for my birthday,” she shared via Instagram. “Everything in the U.K. this week will have to move, but I’ll make it up to you!”

While this marks her first solo cover of Nirvana, Bridgers has a history with the legendary grunge band; her group boygenius famously recreated Nirvana’s iconic 1994 Rolling Stone cover art in 2023. Additionally, the group performed “Satanist” live with Dave Grohl at the Hollywood Bowl in 2024. Grohl was originally intended to contribute to the group’s album The Record, though the collaboration did not come to fruition.

“There was this missed connection where Dave was actually going to come to the studio and play on [The Record],” Bridgers explained. “Then he slept through it or whatever, and we didn’t end up meeting.”

Bridgers released her third studio album, Lost Weekend, on August 14, marking her first solo outing in six years following 2020’s Punisher. The project received critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone writer Angie Martoccio awarding it four-and-a-half stars and describing it as a “spectacular song cycle on love and loss.”

In her review, Martoccio noted, “Bridgers makes up for the last several years (you might call it lost time) by giving us her longest and most daring record yet. A tour de force in the art of disappearing, falling in love, and feeling grief so deeply that waking up every day kind of sucks.”

Later this fall, Bridgers will launch her phone-free arena tour, the Lost Tour. The tour is scheduled to begin on September 15 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis and will conclude on December 12 at Sweden’s Avicii Arena.
