Mike Browning, the drummer and vocalist renowned for co-founding the influential death metal groups Morbid Angel and Nocturnus, has died at the age of 62. Morbid Angel shared a tribute on Instagram: “R.I.P Mike. Thanks for helping making all this happen. Our condolences to his family & especially his daughter.”
Born on May 26, 1964, in Tampa, Florida, Browning began playing drums at 13, honing his skills by jamming to records from Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. His style was shaped by acts such as Angel Witch, Slayer, and Mercyful Fate, and he later connected with guitarist Trey Azagthoth. The two formed Morbid Angel in 1983. The band’s early performances featured dark riffs, rapid blast beats, and provocative stage theatrics, helping lay the groundwork for what would emerge as death metal.
A few years later, Morbid Angel entered the studio to record their debut album, Abominations of Desolation with Browning handling both lead vocals and drums, timing his vocal delivery to the beat. The group ultimately shelved the project, citing dissatisfaction with the recordings and, per Browning, internal disputes. In late 1986, following a clash with Azagthoth, Browning was dismissed from the band. The album surfaced only in 1991 as a demo release.
Following his departure, Browning turned to other endeavors. He spent time with Tampa death metal outfit Incubus (unrelated to the later ’90s band of the same name) before founding Nocturnus in 1987. With Nocturnus, he blended the heaviness of his prior work with science-fiction themes and imagery. The group issued two studio albums in its initial phase, including the 1990 debut The Key, a landmark of progressive death metal. Browning’s tenure ended after the 1992 release Thresholds, from which he was subsequently let go.
In 2013, Browning revived the project under the name Nocturnus AD, assembling a new lineup with two guitarists, a bassist, and a keyboardist. He stayed active with the band until his passing, putting out Paradox in 2019 and Unicursal in 2024. Additionally, he collaborated with vocalist Lisa Lombardo on several ventures, such as After Death, Devine Essence, and Wolf and Hawk.
Artists throughout the metal world have expressed condolences online, among them Alex Bouks of Immolation and Michael Amott of Carnage and Arch Enemy. Megadeth drummer Dirk Verbeuren posted: “Mike, you were a musical legend and truly the nicest guy. I can’t believe you’re gone. Thank you for your music and for all the good chats.”
