Pioneering Feminist Leader and Ms. Magazine Co-Founder Gloria Steinem Dies at 92

Gloria Steinem, the legendary writer, activist, and towering figure in the American women’s rights movement, has passed away at the age of 92. Throughout her life, she stood as a powerful and unwavering voice for feminist causes, becoming globally recognized as a symbol of advocacy and social change.

Instantly recognizable by her signature streaked hair, middle part, and large aviator glasses, Steinem was a magnetic presence wherever she traveled. As a co-founder of Ms. Magazine, she dedicated much of her life to the road, speaking at college campuses, community centers, rallies, and marches across the country.

According to announcements on her and her foundation’s social media channels, Steinem passed away on Wednesday at her home in New York City.

In a tribute shared on social media, her foundation wrote: “Gloria’s greatest gift was her ability to listen to others, to make others feel seen and heard. Her words, actions, and example gave people permission to be their truest selves. Gloria lived true to her independent spirit, always with curiosity and a great sense of humour.”

In her later years, Steinem focused on writing and deepening her connection with her community. She famously hosted intimate talking circles for hundreds of people in her home, fostering open dialogues.

“You can’t do it on the phone or on the web,” she once explained in an interview with The Associated Press. “You have to be there with all five senses. It should be obvious that people can’t empathise with each other unless we’re in the same room.”
