The floodwaters that hit the China‑Nepal border crossing last week were so swift that even the world’s fastest sprinters could not have outrun them, according to the first peer‑reviewed assessment of the disaster.
The study, published online on Tuesday in the Chinese-language journal *Yangtze River*, used digital models and frame‑by‑frame analysis to reconstruct the event, which was triggered by the collapse of a high-altitude glacier in Nepal.
The authors noted that the disaster progressed through a continuous transition from an ice avalanche to a debris flow, then to a mudslide, and finally to a flood, according to the team from the CAS Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment.
They noted that the interval between the ice avalanche and its impact on Gyirong Port was extremely short, leaving limited effective response time and demanding rapid identification, timely information transmission, and swift emergency decision‑making.
