The surprising success of Obsession and Backrooms is compelling Hollywood to reassess what drives a summer blockbuster’s longevity. The contrasting box office trajectories of Pixar’s Toy Story 5 and Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day reveal that traditional blockbusters must evolve beyond spectacle to become culturally resonant narratives that spark ongoing conversations about contemporary issues.
Both films achieved record-breaking openings: Disclosure Day grossed $93.9 million globally ($44 million domestically) over the June 12 weekend, marking the highest debut for an original Spielberg film. A week later, Toy Story 5 opened to $312 million globally ($160 million domestically), becoming the top-grossing film of 2026. However, while Toy Story 5 continues to generate significant revenue—reaching $769 million worldwide—Disclosure Day has seen declining returns, struggling to recoup its investment.
‘Toy Story 5’ Appeals To a Broad Audience
Toy Story 5 has resonated across generations, with 70% of viewers attending as families. In contrast, Disclosure Day primarily attracts an older demographic, with 60% of U.S. audiences aged 35 or older and 55% citing Spielberg’s legacy as their main draw. This narrower appeal reflects its limited reach from the outset.
Pixar designed Toy Story 5 to engage diverse audiences beyond nostalgia. Mothers connected with themes of digital anxiety and parenting challenges. Female viewers found emotional resonance in cowgirl Jessie’s journey and Bonnie’s struggle to build friendships. Children enjoyed the franchise’s signature adventure and humor.
Disclosure Day offered a retrospective look at Spielberg’s career at its peak, but this admiration hasn’t sustained theatrical momentum. Younger audiences have gravitated toward Obsession and Backrooms, both created by Gen-Z filmmakers outside traditional studio systems.
Pixar Transforms Tech Anxiety into Cultural Currency
Described as “Toy meets Tech,” Toy Story 5 taps into generational concerns. Millennials raising children now grapple with screen-time decisions, a theme highlighted by NPR’s Rhitu Chatterjee in *The Guardian*. Stuart Heritage noted the film’s reflection of parental fears about digital worlds eclipsing imagination, while *Business Insider* linked these anxieties to real-world device-management challenges.
The film’s themes mirror global trends: Australia’s 2025 ban on social media for children under 16 sparked similar legislation in Britain, France, and Indonesia. Twenty-six U.S. states now restrict classroom phone use. With 83% of parents surveyed by the University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Poll citing worsening youth mental health linked to social media, Pixar has framed technological concerns within a narrative that resonates.
Four in ten Americans anticipate AI’s negative societal impact, with only 16% expecting positives. Films like *The Devil Wears Prada 2* ($678 million globally) have similarly addressed AI-driven disruption. Meanwhile, Disclosure Day failed to ignite dialogue, offering instead a retro take on UFO lore that feels dated amid modern skepticism. Owen Gleiberman of *Variety* observed that while Spielberg’s 1977 *Close Encounters* captivated audiences, his 2026 effort merely recycles 49-year-old myths, missing the mark on contemporary relevance.
Hollywood Must Accelerate to Stay Relevant
The 2026 summer season underscores challenges facing traditional blockbusters. *Supergirl* opened to $37 million on a $170 million budget, while *Masters of the Universe* earned $64 million domestically against a reported $200 million production cost.
Brandon Katz of Greenlight Analytics explains that Hollywood often misses cultural relevance due to lengthy production cycles. “Films take years from development to release, and culture doesn’t wait,” he says. “The industry has a thermometer when it needs a weather station.” As a result, most films address outdated contexts.
To achieve lasting impact, studios must prioritize agility, scouting emerging ideas from platforms like Reddit and YouTube to craft stories that feel immediate. While this shift promises higher engagement, it remains a complex challenge with significant rewards.
