Pochettino Defends USMNT Approach After Türkiye Defeat, Prioritizes Group Stage Achievement Over Experimental Loss]

INGLOWSOME, Calif. — Mauricio Pochettino bristled at postgame media inquiries following the United States’ 3-2 loss to Türkiye in Thursday’s World Cup finale, emphasizing that his squad secured first place in Group D despite the setback.

“The questions are a little bit weird,” Pochettino remarked. “The mood is like we [are going] home tonight and Türkiye is staying. I need to remind you and everyone that we won the group. Sorry guys, we won.”

Pochettino deployed a heavily rotated lineup featuring nine changes from the team that defeated Australia, prioritizing player rest and yellow card management over achieving historical perfection. While he acknowledged the U.S. could have become the first American team to win all three group matches at a World Cup, he dismissed the notion as insignificant compared to the ultimate prize.

“Making history is winning the World Cup,” Pochettino said. “It’s not winning three matches only within the World Cup. I don’t really understand. It’s a little bit petty if you will — you’re thinking a little too small. You’re telling me you could make history — what does it mean to win three matches if you lose the next one?”

The defeat had minimal impact on Pochettino’s mood, as his primary objectives were met: finishing first in the group and ensuring key players avoided suspensions. He pointed to Germany’s loss to Ecuador in a similar circumstance as validation of his pragmatic approach.

“Winning this game or not winning this game is not going to change [my mood],” he said. “The objective is to finish first. And we are first. And now is the next stage.”

On the positive side, Christian Pulisic entered the match partially recovering from a calf injury and came on as a substitute just before the 60th minute, delivering a promising performance. Pochettino confirmed that getting Pulisic some game action was an “objective,” though he did not commit to starting him in the round of 32 against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

“Yes, I’m happy — he finished well,” Pochettino said. “It was a good impact when he was on the pitch.”

The U.S. now turns its attention to the Round of 32, where Pochettino remain confident: “We are ready.”
