Needles and other sharp metal objects have been discovered inside Halloween sweets distributed to children in Germany, Austria, and Hungary, prompting authorities to urge parents to inspect all treats carefully.
Police in multiple German states have logged incidents ranging from Bavaria in the southeast to Lower Saxony in the north. In Bremervörde, west of Hamburg, a nine-year-old girl injured her tongue on a 5-centimeter pin embedded inside a chocolate bar.
Hungarian authorities have opened a criminal investigation after nails, screws, and pieces of wire were found in candy handed out to trick-or-treaters in and around Gyömrő, east of Budapest. Local officials reported that one young girl discovered a nail inside a toffee wrapped in a chocolate wrapper before swallowing it.
Several similar cases have surfaced across Austria, where Interior Minister Gerhard Karner condemned the acts as “cowardly, malicious and in some cases life-threatening.”
