LONDON — Counterterrorism investigators have announced that the killing of former British politician and reality television personality Ann Widdecombe was a “targeted attack,” authorities stated on Tuesday.
A 28-year-old male has been taken into custody on suspicion of murder and terrorism-related offenses as the investigation remains ongoing.
“It is clear that this was a targeted attack,” Laurence Taylor, head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, informed reporters. “We are currently working to determine the degree of planning or preparation involved, as well as the underlying motivation for the attack.”
The passing of the 78-year-old former Member of Parliament has sent shockwaves through the British political establishment. Widdecombe was a formidable figure in politics for several decades, recognized for her direct communication style and her staunchly socially conservative stances on issues such as abortion and LGBTQ+ rights.
Law enforcement officials believe the attack occurred on Wednesday afternoon. Widdecombe was reported missing after failing to attend a scheduled television interview; her body was discovered the following day at her secluded residence in a village in southwest England.
While police confirmed she sustained “serious injuries,” they have not yet released a formal cause of death.
