Polish law enforcement officials announced on Sunday that they are investigating intelligence regarding a potential plot to target Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
The nation remains on high alert following a recent wave of school stabbings and ongoing concerns regarding potential Russian hybrid warfare intended to undermine Western solidarity with Ukraine.
“We are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness,” stated Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for the minister supervising Poland’s intelligence agencies. Dobrzyński noted that authorities believe there was a significant probability that the threats could have been executed.
These remarks followed an emergency summit on Sunday involving security services, police, and officials from the Ministry of the Interior.
According to Dobrzyński, the information was initially intercepted by the state protection service before being transferred to the police; however, specific details of the threat were not disclosed.
Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka confirmed that Prime Minister Tusk was briefed on the “exceptionally concerning” threat early Sunday morning.
Dobrzyński also highlighted that Polish security services have observed a monthly increase in various types of threats.
The heightened security comes in the wake of three school attacks in Poland’s Mazovia province this week, which resulted in one fatality and numerous injuries, including several children.
Last month, Tusk warned that Russia might escalate hybrid operations against NATO’s eastern flank.
The Prime Minister suggested that Moscow could employ drone or rocket strikes against European nations supporting Ukraine, such as Poland, to erode international support. Russian officials have denied these allegations.
