WARSAW: A Polish court will decide on Wednesday whether to keep in custody a man suspected of planning an assault on the prime minister and defence minister after improvised explosive materials were discovered in his home, prosecutors said.
The suspect, identified formally as Krzysztof N. under Polish privacy protection law, was taken into custody on Sunday on the grounds of planning an attack against Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz.
Warsaw’s regional prosecutors’ spokesperson Piotr Skiba told reporters on Tuesday that he faces nine possible convictions. He noted that the man remains uncooperative, refusing both a confession and an explanation for the alleged wrongdoing.
“The most serious charge involves conspiring to forcibly seize state authority—including the Prime Minister and the Cabinet—using the man’s own stockpile of explosives,” Skiba stated. “If convicted, he could receive a prison sentence ranging from two to fifteen years.”
The additional offences cover three areas: publishing recordings deemed illegal online, promoting ideological agendas calling for the violent overthrow of the Polish state, encouraging armed conflict such as the war in Ukraine, and inciting criminal activity motivated by nationality, ethnicity, race or political perspective.
Investigators learned that the defendant was actively recruiting supporters and established a network involving several hundred individuals, according to a police review of an intercepted recording.
Although violent crime is comparatively rare in Poland, the country remains politically divided and has experienced rising security concerns owing to its proximity to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. The suspect was coordinating actions aimed at government officials while simultaneously critiquing politicians from former administrations, as reported by Skiba.
