[Pope Francis Concludes European Journey in Metz, Honoring Schuman and Advancing Union]
The pontiff selected Metz, a city historically defined by Europe’s evolving borders and conflicts, to honor Robert Schuman, the French Catholic statesman central to the origins of European integration after the Second World War.

A summit titled “At the Roots of Europe for Peace and Unity” brought together Pope Francis and prominent European leaders, including newly elected Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Prince Albert II of Monaco, Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg and former European Commission president Jean‑Claude Juncker.
President Emmanuel Macron, who initially was slated to address only the morning session, also took part in the Mass at Saint‑Étienne Cathedral and conducted the official farewell at the airport after adjusting his agenda.
Early crowds assembled around the cathedral, holding banners and rosaries, while families greeted the pope in an atmosphere blending festivity with deep reverence.
The culmination of the visit saw the pontiff depart France following a private farewell with Macron at Metz‑Nancy‑Lorraine Airport.
