Pope Leo XIV’s postoperative recovery is advancing as anticipated, according to his medical team.
The 71‑year‑old pontiff has begun walking and resumed a normal diet after the approximately 90‑minute operation, his physicians reported in a Vatican‑issued statement.
He was diagnosed with lung cancer following the procedure at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday afternoon; the Vatican described the surgery as successful and without complications.
Early Wednesday blood tests and an X‑ray indicated a normal recovery trajectory, the doctors noted, and he has completed respiratory physiotherapy sessions.
The entire lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung was excised to guarantee a radical resection, the Vatican clarified after the operation.
Following the operation, the Pope awoke normally, returned to his room after a brief observation period, and spent a tranquil night at the hospital, according to earlier Vatican communications.
He is anticipated to remain hospitalized for roughly one week while continuing his recuperation.
