Lisbon housing advocates celebrated their legal victory on 2 November after a court ruled that activist Renata Cambra is permitted to set up a tent in Rossio Square, following a weekend police clearance of demonstrators.
The ruling overturned the automatic midnight curfew imposed by law enforcement, officially recognizing the tent as a symbolic component of the demonstration rather than an unauthorized occupation of public space.
The Acampada movement continues its campaign against Portugal’s housing crisis and the restrictive laws governing landlord-tenant relationships.
Activist Renata Cambra highlights the sharp increase in housing prices, which has made affordable accommodation increasingly elusive, alongside the disproportionate impact of tourism, short-term rentals, and luxury development on overall housing costs.
This legal victory provides the demonstrators with the necessary foundation to persist their encampment in Rossio Square.
