Following a weak July payrolls report showing job losses, prediction‑market traders anticipate that August will bring a hiring rebound, albeit unlikely to match top economists’ predictions.
Traders on Kalshi assign a roughly even split—about a 50 % chance—that the United States added over 50,000 jobs in that month. This outlook sits slightly below the Dow Jones consensus expectation of approximately 53,000 new jobs.
These platforms rely on official Bureau of Labor Statistics data, posing questions such as whether U.S. job growth exceeded predefined thresholds within the reporting window.
Polymarket market participants evaluate a 48 % probability that job creation surpassed 50,000 positions in August—a level lower than many analyst forecasts.
Over the previous two months, both prediction markets and economists overstated payroll figures. They forecast multi‑digit growth in June—as the actual result was just shy of 60,000—and anticipated continued job growth in July, opposite to what occurred.
Given this pattern, Kalshi traders gauge a wide variance for beating or missing the benchmark, while Polymarket speculators view roughly a 25 % chance that the nation actually lost jobs in August and equate probability to a possible threshold above 80,000 jobs.
The anticipated employment figure will be released at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time on Friday.
