Addressing world leaders at the United Nations in New York on Wednesday, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa maintained that the Golan Heights remains an integral part of Syria. His remarks follow Colombia’s recent decision to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the strategic region.
“Any attempts to violate our sovereignty or contravene international law will be resisted. The Golan will remain Syrian territory,” al-Sharaa declared during the assembly.
The diplomatic shift occurred in August when Colombia’s newly elected hard-right administration recognized Israel’s claim to the Golan Heights, a territory captured from Syria during the 1967 war. Prior to this move, the United States was the sole nation to recognize Israel’s 1981 annexation of the area.
The United Nations continues to classify the plateau as Syrian territory under Israeli military occupation. This stance was reinforced in July by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who described the Israeli occupation as “totally unacceptable.”
During his address, al-Sharaa also condemned the ongoing Israeli military strikes against Syria following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime.
“Israel continues to carry out attacks against Syria, including 500 airstrikes, over 1,200 incursions, and 300 detentions. Such actions are inconsistent with current global trends,” he stated, adding, “It is reminiscent of an era we believed was long behind us.”
