President Donald Trump urged Americans to safeguard the liberties envisioned by the nation’s founders 250 years ago, framing them as a bulwark against what he describes as the communist threat emanating from progressive Democrats, as he addressed the nation on the eve of Independence Day at Mount Rushmore.
Speaking beneath the monument honoring these historic figures — an extraordinary assembly of American leaders — Trump reaffirmed his commitment to making the United States as great, bold, and noble as those icons, acknowledging the challenge but pledging to achieve it.
Trump warned of a resurgence of communist ideology, noting that some recent arrivals to the United States espouse doctrines that fundamentally oppose American values and success. He declared that the nation would not tolerate such threats.
His rhetoric invoked memories of the 1950s Red Scare, when alleged communists faced blacklisting and loss of employment throughout government and entertainment sectors.
While he has been voicing these concerns for several days, Trump delivered his most forceful critique on Friday, even as the United States contends with sustained inflation and elevated gasoline prices following the recent U.S.–Israel conflict with Iran.
Concerned that the ongoing conflict could imperil Republican prospects in the upcoming November midterms, GOP legislators have highlighted recent victories by left‑wing Democratic candidates as evidence of a broader ideological challenge.
He linked the alleged communist threat to newcomers who, he argued, bring ideologies hostile to American life. At one point on Friday, Trump suggested that such individuals should be expelled from the country.
Trump asserted that the United States would swiftly defeat communism and remove those who threaten it, while simultaneously pursuing the construction of a larger, stronger, and more prosperous nation.
‘America will never become a communist country,’ Trump declared, before turning his attention to the matter at hand.
‘We can only lose the midterms if we allow ourselves to lose them,’ he stated.
Last week, four progressive candidates — among them three self‑identified democratic socialists — captured competitive Democratic primaries in New York City and Colorado. Similar successes have been recorded in Kentucky, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
Trump described their victories as the most significant threat to the nation since its founding.
On Saturday, Trump was slated to address a crowd on the National Mall ahead of a large fireworks display, which coincided with a heat wave that has disrupted Fourth of July celebrations across much of the country.
At Mount Rushmore, the temperature was a mild 18°C.
