Constitution Hill finished a well-beaten fourth behind Pride Of Arras in his highly anticipated third Flat race in the William Hill September Stakes at Kempton Park.
While brilliant in his hurdling career, Nicky Henderson’s star sprinter has remained a major draw since moving to Flat racing, though this Group Three contest represented a significant step up from his previous victories at Southwell and Kempton earlier in February and March.
Odds-on favorite Gethin took early command of the mile-and-a-half race, with jockey Billy Loughnane and Constitution Hill (9-2) settling into fourth place and maintaining strong position turning for home.
When asked to quicken just outside the two-furlong marker, Constitution Hill showed brief promise before it became evident he couldn’t match the leaders, allowing Ralph Beckett’s Pride Of Arras (11-2) to take the lead and hold off Gethin’s late charge by a length.
