Prime Minister Andy Burnham exchanged messages with an individual impersonating the chief of staff to US President Donald Trump.
Downing Street has not issued a statement regarding the incident, as reported by Politico.
According to Politico, officials indicated that a limited number of messages were exchanged before Burnham identified the contact as illegitimate.
A government spokesperson stated: “We do not comment on national security matters.”
The communication involved text messages, with no direct conversation occurring between the parties.
Authorities confirmed that no significant content was shared, and the exchanges were promptly reported once suspicions arose.
The BBC previously reported an FBI investigation into a hack of Susie Wiles’ phone in May 2024.
Wiles, a prominent Trump ally, revealed that her personal device was targeted by an impersonator using her contacts list to reach senior US officials.
Though focused on her personal number, the impersonation reached recipients including US senators, governors, and corporate executives.
In 2024, the Foreign Office confirmed that former Foreign Secretary David Cameron had been targeted by a hoax call mimicking Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.
Lord Cameron also engaged in text exchanges with the impersonator posing as Poroshenko.
During his premiership, Cameron had direct interactions with Poroshenko, including high-level diplomatic meetings.
The FCDO disclosed details publicly to prevent potential misuse of the information.
