Minions & Monsters has opened in theaters and early signals suggest it will be another success for the Despicable Me franchise, though its box‑office performance is unlikely to alter Universal Pictures’ streaming release strategy.
As the seventh installment in the Despicable Me series, Minions & Monsters premiered nationwide on July 1. Directed by Pierre Coffin, it explores the origin of the iconic yellow, pill‑shaped Minions, predating their encounters with the franchise’s main antagonist.
After serving various villains, the Minions inadvertently travel to 1920s Hollywood during the silent‑film boom. When sound films emerged, their unintelligible chatter rendered them obsolete in the industry.
Seeking a return to the screen, the characters James and Henry produce a monster film using a magical tome that summons the most terrifying beings. When these creatures turn hostile and aim for world domination, the Minions unite to stop them.
The film is rated PG and features voice performances by Allison Janney, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Trey Parker, Bobby Moynihan, Phil LaMarr, Zoey Deutsch, Christoph Waltz, and George Lucas.
Previously, Universal released movies that earned less than $50 million within the first two weeks on PVOD after 17 days in theaters, whereas titles grossing over $50 million debuted on PVOD after 30 days.
In March, Universal announced that all its releases must stay in theaters for at least five weekends (roughly 31‑32 days) before PVOD launch. This window will extend to seven weekends (about 45 days) beginning in 2027.
Following the policy, titles such as Reminders of Him and You, Me & Tuscany have enjoyed a five‑weekend theatrical run before PVOD release. Conversely, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s window was extended to seven weekends. Although Minions & Monsters is expected to match that blockbuster scale — its predecessors have grossed $937 million to $1.15 billion worldwide — Universal is likely to release it on PVOD after five weekends, not seven.
The five‑weekend approach stems from the recent performance of the franchise’s last two entries — Despicable Me 4 (2024) and Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022). Both amassed over $900 million worldwide, demonstrating strong audience demand despite pandemic‑related challenges.
Consequently, Minions & Monsters is slated for a PVOD release on August 4, coinciding with the typical Tuesday launch schedule. If Universal chooses to extend the theatrical window to seven weekends, the streaming debut would occur no later than August 18.
How Soon Will ‘Minions & Monsters’ Begin Streaming on Peacock?
Universal generally allows a 118‑day (approximately 18‑week) gap between a film’s theatrical debut and its arrival on Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming platform.
For instance, Reminders of Him will debut on Peacock on Friday, July 10, roughly 18 weekends after its March 13 theatrical release. Similarly, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is slated for a July 30 Peacock debut, about 18 weekends after its April 1 theatrical premiere.
If Minions & Monsters follows this schedule, it should be available on Peacock on October 30, aligning with the Halloween season.
Currently, Minions & Monsters is viewable only in theaters; consult local listings for showtimes.
