Protesters in Geneva engaged in clashes with law enforcement, set a vehicle ablaze, and damaged a bank’s windows on Sunday, expressing dissent ahead of the G7 summit in France. Demonstrations were organized by a coalition opposing the group’s policies ahead of the leaders’ gathering in neighboring France.
A diverse coalition, including environmental advocates and feminist organizations, participated in the march alongside proponents of independent media, Palestinian rights, and anti-imperialist causes. A boat bearing a “No G7” sail also glided past swimmers and sunbathers along the lakeshore.
Law enforcement responded with tear gas as demonstrators threw projectiles. Nearby, firefighters addressed a burning vehicle several minutes from the march route, where riot police established a secured perimeter.
At a Banque du Leman branch, protesters dismantled wooden barriers and shattered windows.
Alexander Brahier, a Geneva police official, reported an estimated 7,000 participants. He withheld arrest figures pending further assessment.
A subgroup of approximately 15 individuals wearing black hoodies and masks congregated near an anti-Trump banner, displaying messages stating “Antisemitic never; anti-Zionist always.””
