Proton has unveiled its most significant update to the Lumo chatbot since its launch nearly a year ago. Version 2.0 introduces image recognition and generation capabilities, positioning Lumo as a credible alternative to ChatGPT and Gemini. According to Proton, the enhanced chatbot can create, analyze, and modify images. Importantly, all image-based conversations remain secured by zero-access encryption, ensuring they are accessible solely on the user’s device and inaccessible to third parties — including Proton.
Beyond image generation, Lumo 2.0 features a ‘thinking mode’ designed for enhanced reasoning. Proton reports that Lumo 2.0 Lite achieved a score 127% higher than Lumo 1.4 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index benchmark, with Lumo 2.0 Max reaching 240% higher. This benchmark assesses performance across various tasks. The updated model benefits from deeper contextual understanding, enabling it to retrieve more relevant background information for improved response accuracy. Additionally, it can now provide up-to-date information accompanied by source citations.
Lumo 2.0 is now accessible to users. While the fundamental AI features are offered at no cost, unlimited chats, advanced image generation capabilities, and access to Proton’s premium models require a subscription to Lumo Plus priced at $10 per month.
