In an official statement, Punjab Police and the Crime Control Department (CCD) acknowledged a mistake in the shooting of a nine‑year‑old girl, Hania, in Chakwal. The authorities confirmed that the incident will neither be defended nor covered up under any circumstances.
Police officials described the event as an instance of “criminal negligence,” citing the CCD officer’s lack of training as a key factor that led to a misjudgment of the situation.
Hania’s parents and younger brother sustained injuries when CCD personnel mistakenly fired at their vehicle, believing it was associated with a robbery.
During a press briefing, Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdul Karim characterized the incident as “deeply tragic” and pledged a comprehensive investigation. He emphasized that the negligence will be documented to hold responsible parties accountable in court.
Karim stressed that institutions must regain public trust by admitting mistakes and that the inquiry would be conducted independently.
Punjab CCD Additional Inspector General (AIG) Sohail Zafar Chattha also highlighted the importance of restoring the family’s faith in law‑enforcement agencies. He noted that the public’s confidence in the CCD hinges on the department’s perceived infallibility, and the tragic event has embarrassed both the CCD and the police.
“This is an appropriate moment to learn from the criminal negligence and correct the individual failings within the CCD to prevent similar incidents,” Chattha added.
Both senior officials reiterated that the involved CCD officer’s failure to assess the situation accurately was a “huge blunder.” They underscored the need for improved training and capacity building within the department.
A plan to address training shortcomings has been outlined to avert future occurrences. “We will not justify this criminal negligence in any circumstances,” the AIG affirmed, expressing solidarity with the victim’s family.
The officer charged with murder will receive no sympathy from the police. Chattha also indicated that the formal charges will be filed within a week and presented to the court for further legal action.
The press conference followed a call from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for a “transparent” inquiry into the killing of Hania. The premiers’ statement highlighted the necessity of a detailed examination of the facts and assured the family’s paramount importance.
