Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump discussed Ukraine and the forthcoming NATO summit in Turkey during a telephone conversation on Saturday.
During the 85‑minute call, Putin extended congratulations to Trump on the 250th anniversary of United States independence, according to Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov, who shared an audio statement with reporters.
“The two leaders naturally addressed the issue of a Ukrainian settlement, especially in view of Trump’s upcoming participation at the NATO summit in Turkey on July 7‑8,” Ushakov said.
The American president reiterated his willingness to help bring about a rapid end to hostilities and to work toward resolving the crisis.
Ushakov added that US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would continue their mediation efforts and were prepared to travel to Moscow at a suitable time.
“The Russian side underscored its preference for a political and diplomatic resolution to the conflict, while keeping in mind Russia’s fundamental positions,” he said.
