Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on Wednesday of retaliatory actions against the West’s seizure of Russian commercial ships, which he characterized as “piracy.”
During a visit to a Russian warship participating in a Pacific naval exercise, Putin condemned the Western seizure of vessels linked to Russia as a violation of international maritime law.
“These actions amount to piracy and robbery,” Putin stated. “Should such measures continue, Russia will be compelled to respond accordingly.”
He emphasized that any response would not be limited to the locations where the vessels were detained, indicating Russia could act “in any area deemed necessary and appropriate,” including the Pacific.
Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Viktor Liina informed Putin that the navy was prepared to commence inspections of commercial vessels serving “unfriendly nations.” He highlighted that numerous ships operated by British, French, and other European carriers flew the flags of other countries, forming a “shadow fleet.”
“We possess sufficient resources to inspect and detain vessels from unfriendly nations and their shadow fleet,” Liina stated. “We are ready to initiate these operations.”
