A Qatari liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier has been struck by “unidentified objects” while transiting the Gulf, according to the Qatar Gas Transport Company. This incident marks the latest in a series of attacks on commercial shipping since the US-Israel conflict with Iran began in February.
The vessel affected is the LNG carrier Al Mayeda, which is owned by the Qatar Gas Transport Company. The attack occurred on Friday evening, and the company confirmed the incident in an official statement released on Sunday.
According to the company, no crew members were injured, and there has been no environmental damage reported as a result of the collision. The statement, which was published via the Qatar Stock Exchange, indicates that the vessel remains in a “safe condition, operational” and that a full assessment of the impact is currently underway.
The Qatar Gas Transport Company provides essential towage and marine support services to Qatari ports and terminals. The series of maritime incidents has raised significant concerns regarding security in the region. Since the onset of the conflict, more than 120 commercial vessels have been targeted, based on data compiled by the International Maritime Organization and the UK Maritime Trade Operations.
Iran, which closed the Strait of Hormuz early in the conflict, has repeatedly warned that vessels attempting to transit the vital waterway without authorization would face “destruction.” The frequency of these attacks has escalated notably since the United States reimposed a blockade on Iran’s southern ports in July. October marked the most severe month of the conflict for maritime security, with at least 29 ships hit, surpassing the 20 attacks recorded in March.
