The Amiri Diwan announced the death of former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away at the age of 74.

With hearts steadfast in faith and trust in God’s decree and destiny, the Amiri Diwan mourns the great loss to the nation of the late—may God have mercy on him—His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away this morning, according to a statement released by the emir’s office on Sunday.

Sheikh Hamad, who reigned from 1995 to 2013, was instrumental in steering Qatar’s rapid modernization.

During his tenure, the country experienced substantial economic, social, and cultural transformations that elevated its profile on the global stage.

He guided significant investment initiatives and forged extensive international partnerships, propelling Qatar to become the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas.

In 2013, he transferred authority to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, then 33, in a rare abdication by a hereditary Gulf Arab ruler.
