Qualcomm Strengthens AI Edge with Strategic Acquisition of Modular Chip Startup

The company confirmed today’s acquisition of Modular for approximately four billion dollars, marking a significant move toward developer-centric AI solutions. Modular, based in Silicon Valley, specializes in a modular chip software platform and proprietary AI capabilities. Following the deal, Qualcomm plans to integrate Modular’s team and technology across its AI offerings.

The acquisition also includes a $300 million investment in Modular’s employees and comes after the startup raised $250 million for a valuation of $1.6 billion nine months earlier. Modular’s mission focuses on enabling developers to deploy AI across diverse platforms without rewriting code for each chip.

Modular’s co-founders and staff are expected to join Qualcomm, signaling a broader push into AI infrastructure. President and CEO Cristiano Amon emphasized the strategic importance of horizontal platforms that offer flexibility across compute environments.

Aware of evolving market demands, Modular has previously acquired Ventana Micro Systems and is actively collaborating with cloud giants like Amazon and tech leaders such as ByteDance.

The acquisition underscores Qualcomm’s ambitions to expand beyond chips into the broader mobile and data center markets, aiming to provide tailored AI solutions for a wide spectrum of products.
