Queiroz Returns as Ghana Coach Just Two Months After Resignation

Carlos Queiroz stepped down after guiding Ghana to the World Cup round of 32, but he is back for an interim term.

Carlos Queiroz has been re‑appointed as head coach of the Ghana national team for an unspecified period, just two months after his departure following the nation’s FIFA World Cup run.

The Ghana Football Association announced on Wednesday that the 73‑year‑old Portuguese tactician will “begin a new coaching mandate, starting with the forthcoming international window”.

“Queiroz’s vast international experience, technical know‑how, and deep understanding of the Black Stars make him the ideal candidate to steer the team into its next phase,” the GFA stated.

Despite having only a few months to prepare the squad, the veteran coach—who has previously led Iran, Portugal, Colombia and Egypt—took Ghana to the World Cup round of 32.

Ghana found itself without a head coach just 72 days before the World Cup opener, after parting ways with Otto Addo following a string of friendly losses to Austria and Germany in March.

The Black Stars are set to face Ivory Coast in home‑and‑away fixtures for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with the upcoming international window running from September 21 through October 6.

Queiroz guided Portugal to the round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup and later spent three editions in charge of Iran, picking up three victories in 13 matches.

Born in Mozambique, the former goalkeeper has also coached Egypt, Japan, Colombia and South Africa, and previously led Portugal in the early 1990s.
