While many throughout the NFL have sought to frame Deshaun Watson as a sympathetic figure, former Browns quarterback Brady Quinn has no interest in endorsing that portrayal.
Watson currently leads the Browns to a 3-1 start and is posting career-high numbers in passing yards and touchdowns. However, after years of avoiding accountability, some outlets have reframed his resurgence as a redemption arc. Quinn dismisses this narrative as deliberate PR spin.
“I’m not sure what PR spin they’re attempting or what revisionist history they’re constructing,” Quinn stated. “He brought every bit of that adversity on himself. There isn’t a single part of his past struggles for which he isn’t solely responsible. The unfortunate reality is that this conversation will continue because they keep reviving it. Stop throwing a pity party. You won a game—make it about the team, make it about everyone but yourself.”
Quinn emphasized that Watson should find it easy to center the Browns’ success on the collective unit rather than himself, given the team’s recent winning streak.
“This isn’t Lamar Jackson carrying Louisville or Baltimore in college,” Quinn noted. “You’re succeeding because of the support around you. I hope he stops trying to manufacture sympathy.”
Watson’s decline began when dozens of women accused him of sexual misconduct in lawsuits he later settled. Since those settlements, he has demonstrated little remorse or accountability. Nevertheless, Watson received a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract from the Browns. Since signing, he has struggled with health, consistency, and fan relations.
Browns fans certainly have reason to celebrate their team’s current form. However, a feel-good storyline does not require celebrating Watson’s comeback. He can compete without becoming a sympathetic figure, and he should not receive sympathy for adversities he created himself.
